Abstract

Background: Thalassemia is a genetic disease caused by cell mutations which are included in the most inherited hemoglobinopathy group disorder in the world from fellow carrier Thalassemia parents to their children with birth rates increase every year. This is because a carrier thalassemia is unaware of the symptoms, so it is necessary to screening the couples who are getting married. At present, dermatoglyphics is very useful in helping screening for genetic diseases, because dermatoglyphics is determined by genetic factors that is suspected there is a association between dermatoglyphics and thalassemia that makes dermatoglyphics can be used as a non-invasive thalassemia screening tool tha need to review its implementation according to the Islamic view. Method: This study is a descriptive quantitative and sample determination using purposive sampling method. The quantitative data obtained from questionnaires filled out by respondents and the results of taking dermatoglyphic at the fingertips of the subjects' hands by ink print. Instrument for collecting data using respondent's dermatoglyphic pattern questionnaire, informed consent sheet, and tools for taking dermatoglyphic pattern prints. Assessment of the dermatoglyphic pattern in the hands of parents of thalassemia major patients using descriptive statistics. Results: The results are presented in the form of a grafic, with a total sample of 100 respondents. Based on the results of the descriptive study the frequency of the type of dermatoglyphics pattern of parents of thalassemia major patients consists of radial loop 58.8%, plain whorl 24.2%, central pocket loop whorl 6.1%, double loop whorl 5.9%, ulnar loop 2.2%, tented arch 1.6%, plain arch 1.1%, and accidental whorl 0.1%. For the TRC the highest number was found for each thumb and ring finger of the right and left hand, whereas for the ATD angle on the right and left hands it was almost same ie <45o and no simian crease lines were found on the respondent's entire hands. Conclusion: Based on this research, it can be concluded that the left hand finger is dominated by a radial loop. While for the right hand only the ring finger is dominated by plain whorl, and the other four fingers are dominated by radial loop. Dermatoglifi examination as a means of screening is allowed according to Islam because it is an attempt to have healthy children.
